 Celebrity
by Paul Mathews

17th - 20th October 2018 at
Gayton Road Community Centre,
West Bromwich.

Celebrity is about the struggles of fame and family.  Max and Amber Kettell are just starting out on their journey of parenthood whilst both leading equally busy lives with a baby who never seems to stop crying.
Max, a famous author is suffering from writers block while trying to meet publishers’ deadlines.  His wife Amber, a PR agent to the stars, struggles with one very promiscuous client resulting in Sarah, Max’s sister having to take on babysitting duties.  It really is all hands on deck, but things get even more hectic when Max and Sarah get an unexpected visitor.
The play is an up to date comedy with many twists and turns along the way.
Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

 our Spring 2018 production!

Miners are Salt of the Earth

Sunday, March 4th 2018 marked the 110th anniversary of a local and national tragedy, the Hamstead mining disaster where, in 1908, a major fire in the downcast shaft of the Hamstead Colliery sadly took the lives of 26 of the 31 miners working there. Members of multi award-winning Charlemont Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) have been busy researching the history of local mining communities for their upcoming production of John Godber’s “Salt of the Earth” which will be performed from Wednesday, 2nd May to Saturday, 5th May 2018 at the theatre at West Bromwich Community Centre, Gayton Road, West Bromwich, B71 1QS.

Chairman, David Hill tells us more: “John Godber’s drama is a fine mixture of comedy and tragedy interwoven with songs from the period by artists such as Bing Crosby, Vera Lynn, Dean Martin and even David Bowie. The cast have had great fun learning more about miners, the intricacies of the Yorkshire accent and even how to waltz.”

If you would like to see CADS’ production of “Salt of the Earth” in May, tickets are only £8 each and are available on the Box office

Actors from the society (from left) Chad Dent, Lucy Styles and Max Darknell took the opportunity to visit the memorial of the 1908 disaster in the centre of Hamstead village as the play takes place in a close-knit Yorkshire mining community very like Hamstead which was a mixture of miners from all over Great Britain. “Salt of the Earth” which won an Edinburgh Fringe award for John Godber back in 1988, follows the lives of the fictional Parker sisters, May and Annie over four decades from 1947 right up until 1988. It examines the sisters’ relationship with one another and with May’s son, Paul who chooses not to follow in his father’s footsteps.
